IS: Infinite Stratos – Infinite Stereotypes

“With a first day like this, I can already see my future cast over my unlucky stars…”

My thoughts exactly

Well here’s one to watch for the visuals. Infinite Stratos looks pretty good from the outset, with hints of some rather flashy fight scenes, but will definitely be marred by its ridiculous clichés. Definitely a winner for those who just want the sweet delicious cream without the cake.

Something to look forward to...

Plot summary from ANN: “Infinite Stratos (IS), a weaponized exoskeleton system, has become the dominant tool of warfare and conflict. Unfortunately for the men in society, only women are able to operate Infinite Stratos… with very few exceptions. One of those exceptions is ORIMURA Ichika, an orphan raised by his older sister who is herself a famous IS pilot. When his compatibility with IS is discovered after he accidentally touches an IS at the age of 15, he’s given a scholarship and enrolled in a school that specializes in training IS pilots. Which of course means an… intersting life surrounded by girls for this shy, unassuming boy…”

Boy, the harem life is hard

It’s as if multiple genres were put in the same pot, with the end result the half-cooked stew that Infinite Stratos is. I feel there could have been a decent amount of potential to this series if they had focused on the whole “men no longer wearing the pants of society”-thing, but it seems that they’re more inclined to focus on the harem/romance stuff (meh) and the actual mecha battles (which isn’t actually a bad idea).

The cast is generally unlikeable, ranging from a really detestable English girl Cecilia Alcott, to comic trio of schoolgirls (somewhat reminiscent of Izumi, Miki and Risa from Hayate no Gotoku) who are barely funny. Maybe they’ll be given some development as the series progresses, but we all know they’ll all end up falling for the “unlucky” Orimura.

Stop! I've had enough of you!

Yet despite the hate, I find Infinite Stratos far more watchable than other harem shows, particularly because:

1) There will be pretty mecha battles

2) The main character isn’t THAT much of a pissy douche…. from what I’ve seen so far…

3) The production values are solid

At least we can agree on 1 thing: studying sucks

As long as you can forgive the clear lack of originality that pervades in this series, I’m sure you’ll find Infinite Stratos a bunch a eyecandylicious fun. I myself found it relatively entertaining, so as long as my bandwidth holds, this show will remain on my current watch-list.

OP: very standard J-Pop. Nothing special for an OP in terms of visuals, but at least it looks nice right?

ED: As inspiring as a worn-out shoe.

Close shave~

You’d be thinking that for a female-dominated society, they won’t all be falling head over heels for some lackey joining their ranks, but instead despise him.

Actually, if you assume that the girls have career AND family aspirations, he is one of the ideal men. Notice how they dismissed gender handicaps by saying this is the 21st century. Their egos have bloated because of their machines. As the only man on “their level,” he is worthy of conquest. His Orimura-sensei pedigree also helps.

If he beats Drilltails (and he probably will), he has the qualifications and status to be with any of them. The only unanswered question is whether he’s a good person. Watch him read that basic manual in less than a week, and perform flawlessly. There’s your hard worker!

There’s our lil trooper! Yeah he’s definitely not your typical douche

mmm…..a mecha harem anime series which has ur tsundere character who does kendo, ur detestable upper class English lady, ur laid back rather oblivious hero, your cutesy soft teacher accompanied by a tough angry one.

It’s so unoriginal that it’s original!

As long as the mech fights are awesome, I’ll keep watching. As soon as the harem antics take over, this show will be worthless imho
