The World God Only Knows – initial impressions

“When  I say I’m interested in girls, I don’t mean that kind!”

I see what they did there...

Yay, another harem series… but it’s not all doom and gloom, as World (as henceforth I shall abbreviate the title) shows great promise and bodes some decent fun for the future! If only the million other harem shows out there showed some of the same humour and inspiration as World.

The harem finish - a dream?

For starters, Keima actually does end up hooking up (I’m assuming) with each and every girl of interest. Most harem shoes these days shove some wimpy male into a bunch of bishoujos, and let the rest happen unconvincingly. World doesn’t follow this tragic formula and actually spends a good deal of time on Keima’s individual conquests.

Chief Dokoro - cutest demon ever

That being said, the characterisation of the female targets here isn’t developed too significantly, but it’s done well enough to get the job done. Rather, it’s the interaction between Elsee and Keima, and how they ‘help’ each other to hunt loose souls that definitely keeps the show fresh and entertaining.

Pescatore Styx

The slapstick is great, and I’m pleased that the show isn’t overrun with fanservice. However that bath scene in ep 2 was really lame and predictable, and was just a thorn to my backside as I was watching this. Also, where the hell did that huge hole in the house go? And what did Keima’s father do to deserve assumed divorce/discussions with his wife using a lawyer. Seriously guys… continuity.

She looks pleased...?

Elsee’s characterisation is far from complex. She’s just another resident living on Moeblob Lane. However, Keima is an interesting protagonist and a worthy lead character. He isn’t totally useless, despite being an otaku and it’s definitely clear he’s affected by the fact that each target forgets the ‘conquest’ at the conclusion. Hopefully his intelligence and ‘practical’ knowledge of the subject matter win over this series.

OP: creative visuals. Song starts out well, but then changes to something weird???

ED: OK song. Nice idea at the end!

*inserts over-used constipation joke*

PS. WTF is with a season 2 ALREADY green-lit….

Yea i heard they got a s2 confirmed already. That was rather quick….It’s pretty interesting. Dunno how long the formula will last but it’s pretty good for now.

Well, I’ve heard that the manga is pretty good, probably good enough to have warranted the green light for s2.

Anyway, the OP and Eden of the East vibes all over it. I wonder which studio was responsible for the OP…

@ Justin – agree. I was immediately reminded of Eden of the East after watching this OP

@ Bonkler – this guy gets the ladies. I don’t.

Well it isn’t -really- that difficult to get the heroine in an galge/eroge. It’s always like this : go for the most obvious choices. She’s always the easiest to get. The truly difficult ending to get is the harem end. It’s just a random mix of choices at particular checkpoints, so that you have no surefire way of getting there.
