To Aru Majutsu no Index II – initial impressions

“Such misfortune…”

Food glorious food.

Aaaaand the ‘biggest’ show of the season has landed, not with a bang, but more like a whimper. Well, at least the season shows a whole lot of promise I guess. I was really intrigued by what they showed us in season I, so season II should prove to be even better hopefully.

Looks like a bad case of wind.

What really got me hooked to the whole Index universe is the way they suggested the whole science vs magic/religion stuff. It’s a tough, tedious and arduous debate, but somehow in the Index series, it’s actually damn interesting and entertaining to watch. I’d even go as far as to say that it was the absence of this topic that made the Railgun sidestory so irritating to watch.

Misaka drank too much tonight...

That’s because beyond the themes of magic, espers and religion, To Aru Majutsu no Index has little else to offer. While I must admit that the characters from season one were all nice to watch, none of them really had a huge impact on me per se. Touma is a melancholic nice guy with a saviour complex that borders on annoying at times, Index is a loveable loli/damsel in distress, and Misaka Mikoto is a tomboyish tsundere. The rest of the cast is rather forgettable bar Tsuchimikado the double/triple/multi-agent.

:3

The fights from season one were also not bad, but they weren’t fantastic either, and the second season’s first ep pretty much failed to set a higher bar. Let’s hope those other loli nuns from the op can show Touma how to really fight.

Violent Jap girl is back

It’s obviously too early to tell how the second season will progress. At this stage, I’m really begging for some character development, which does seem to be in the minds of J.C. Staff. It’s clear that Misaka will play a far more significant role in the season shown by the emphasis placed on her in the OP.

Too close of comfort?

Overall it’s hard to judge where this series plans on going just by watching this essentially filler-type episode. I’m hoping J.C. Staff makes full use of the original work to develop and direct an awesome story, otherwise I’m going to be sorely disappointed.

OP: an okay song that is combined with generally lacklustre ideas.

ED: once an okay song is combined with generally lacklustre ideas. The CG doesn’t blend well.

It’s a wonder how Index isn’t 103,000 pounds. I guess a magical diet book must be among those forbidden grimoires.

Yeah, Misaka is shown in a prominent position in the ED, so I’m hoping she’ll be one of the main characters this time around.
