Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls – first impressions

“The country of Great Japan is beautiful. However beauty can be a sin sometimes…”

The cast

Well… at least it’s not another Romance of Three Kingdoms adaptation. However it is another ecchi harem fanservice series with plenty of revealing action. Wow, Arms really has got some experience in this field, with series such as Ikkitousen and Queen’s Blade both under their belt.

Big and round... like most things in ecchi series...

I have to admit, the animation work here is overall very cool. The watercolour filter they use is pretty nice to watch and it gives this show more style and substance than the material shown itself. The ink blotches are a nice touch too, though at the start I felt they made the show look a little too messy. Also it was pretty lulzy how convenient they were at censoring 😛

It's as if a kid with a paint brush when crazy with it

The action shown in this premier episode was actually rather great to watch as well. Though it felt out of place and a little random, the opening sequence was quite a sight to see. The couple of fight scenes later on never developed into anything special, but I’m gonna assume the action of this series will improve significantly as the show progresses.

Ah censoring...

However, the jokes in Samurai Girls are just plain bad, being a mixture of poor acting and heavily overused cliché. Not once did I ever grin watching this episode. Once again Kugimiya Rie voices a midget tsundere-type character, Sanada Yukimura. I personally found the maid character Hattori Hanzou really irritating to watch.

Random action shot

Ngeh this will be one series I won’t be covering anytime soon…

OP: beautifully animated, trashy song, deliberate yet pointless fanservice… but at least it looks good right?

ED: more fanservice, stupid song

More of your usual misunderstandings.

haha you know what a series is going to involve if it’s done by the same guys who did Queen’s Blade. At least they censor stuff?

    I enjoyed it quite a bit actually… :/
It’s much when you put it next to something like QUEENS BLADE. But then again, this is only the first episode…so I guess we’ll have to wait and see. But either way, I’m looking forward to episode 2, and it’s a shame it’s about a month away…
