Katanagatari – 08

“Pengin, Oshidori, Houhou… the long-lived Umigame has become… short-lived.”

Context - this image needs some.

Episode 8 wasn’t necessarily a bad episode. It just lacked the style and wit that made many previous episodes so enjoyable. Nevertheless, it was a solid build-up of the events to come, as we got to see Emonzaemon in action and another Maniwa Corps leader die.

"Why are you wearing a bucket on your head?!"

To be honest I’m actually running of things to say about Katanagatari :P. All the episodes generally follow the same formula, and I don’t really feel like repeating myself over and over again. However I will note that the chemistry between Shichika and Togame this episode was really nice. They were like an arguing couple, and there was something more to their relationship than just some thinly disguised innuendo. Togame was actually useful this ep too!

Gentlemen, here come the ladies.

The music in this episode also had an unexpected boost. It played a great role in the fight scenes, and I hope Iwasaki Taku continues this fine form. As for the animation…. last month’s episode was noticeably cheaper and less refined. I think it was less obvious in episode 8, but it still lacked the artistic and colourful flair that was apparent at the beginning of the series. The fight scene with the doll was really nice though.

Looks like he grew another arm...

Most importantly the dialogue in this episode wasn’t as enjoyable to listen to than in previous episodes. It definitely sounded not as playful and over-the-top as previous episodes. There was plenty of chance to go overboard in the meeting between Togame and Princess Hitei, but they didn’t do it… If anything the princess was a great thorn in the backside, as we were given little chance to read her as a character.

Super saiyan Togame

What was done well in this episode was how they pretty much left everything open. We really have no idea how Katanagatari will end in its last 4 episodes: the princess is still at large, the Maniwani only have 3 members left, with Emonzaemon sent to assassinate its leader, and Togame and Shichika still on their quest to recover the remaining swords. This has been one helluva dragged out series.

Sneekin mishun!

OP: It looks pretty, ALI Project’s songs have NEVER sat well with me.

ED: Squeaky voice is squeaky. Boring ED is boring.

I'd be scared too if I was a Maniwa Corps leader...

Is it me or are the Maniwa way to weak. Seriously, they gotta start fighting themselves. As villians, they’re pretty much useless so far. Sorta annoys me (cos I like ninja…)
