Highschool of The Dead – impressions

“Bullets, braenz and bewbs”

Think 28 days later... with breasts

So yeah, I’ve been reading how this series caused some discussion in the blogosphere with its reference to some Korean actor, so I decided to have a look myself. In a nutshell, HOTD is the quintessential anime series for guys. Odious amounts of fanservice, intense and often over-the-top fight scenes and plenty of brain-dead zombies.

Nice.... guns...

Taking a step back, when you look at HOTD, there’s very little that separates it from ANY zombie flick: top-secret government lab is breached releasing a virus that turns humans into mindless zombies, aforementioned zombies can only be killed by a heavy blow to the head, zombies seek living flesh of breakfast, lunch and tea, etc.

Brains - energy food for zombies.

What does make HOTD very distinct however is its style. Madhouse has done a very solid job at animation, with all those fluid panning shots and fight scenes. Blood splatter is also pretty realistic. I can’t really say much about the music, probably because it’s forgetable besides the awesome OP track.

Sometimes the humans are just as scary as the zombies.

Of course you can’t talk about HOTD without mentioning the gratuitous fanservice. The occasional pantsu is probably an understatement. HOTD really goes straight for the balls. All the highschool girls and the nurse have *shapely* figures. If you really require further explanation, watch episode 6. It will make you think about waterguns in a very different way.

Listen to the tsundere.

Despite the various clichés  HOTD never really ends up as disappointing nor irritating. While Rei does border on angsty, self-centered bitch in summary, all of the characters are pretty watchable to some degree (especially the females ;P). My favourite has got to be the gun nut/otaku Hirano.

Guns - not so fun when you're the target.

HOTD will probably end up as every guy’s guilty pleasure of the season, but will most likely end up disgusting female viewers as it leaves little in terms of plot and explainability.

*Insert required maid costume shot*

OP: one of the best OPs this season, if not the best. It combines an awesome tune to some very nice animated sequences which summarise the whole premise pretty accurately.

ED: the tune changes each week, and I personally haven’t enjoyed any of the songs. However it’s an interesting idea, having a wall full of photos of the cast pre-infection.

Proof nerds can still kick ass.

I’m loving Hirano. We don’t get lots of Gun Otakus in anime! hehe!
