Break Blade – First Chapter: Hour of Awakening – impressions

“So it wasn’t just a myth. You really can’t use magic.”

The Kingdom of Binonten

So what have we here? In the world of Break Blade i.e. Cruzon, the inhabitants have the power to control quartz, which they use to do almost anything mechanically-related. Rygart Arrow was raised in this world, although he is unable to control the mineral at all, which is pretty damn rare in this world. For some reason, he’s friends with a king Hodr, his queen Sygyn and Zess, a genius mecha (golem) pilot who’s decided to fight for the invading kingdom Athens.

Point blank pwnage

Sounds complicated? Trust me, when you watch it, it’s far simpler that it sounds. For some reason, this movie is packed to the brim with old clichés, from the outcast possessing the key to operating some uber mecha and the fact that he’s friends with leaders of both sides of the war. The whole premise of fighting fate is hardly a new concept as well.

That better be safety glass he's breaking 😛

Also the fanservice-y moements in the movie felt a little out of place, and I felt they were hardly worth the effort of putting in the movie to be honest. One one hand there was discussion of a planned attack, which would have created a tenser atmosphere, but it was just distracted by a pilot mentioning how huge some 12year-old girl’s jugs were. I mean come on. There’s a time and place for everything.

Snaaaaaaaaaaake

At least there’s some pretty solid voicework. There’s a list of very noteable seiyuu involved in Break Blade, such as Saitou Chiwa, Kamiya Hiroishi, Hanazawa Kana and Shiraishi Minoru. The orchestrated soundtrack is very good as well, and I really enjoyed the OP song Fate sung by KOKIA.

Say cheese~

In general the animation isn’t too shabby either, though there were quite a few still shots. However the big money shots were quite a let down. Boring fight scenes are boring. At least the character models looked nice, and movements were fluid and not distorted. I’m expecting the battles to significantly improve as the movies keep rolling in.

In da hood~!

All in all, Break Blade Chapter One was a less than satisfying introduction to the world of Cruzon. Sure, the result looked and sounded nice, but the movie was riddled with all these clichés I’m tired of hearing about. Here’s to some improvement in the next couple of movies.
