Katanagatari – 07

“Anyway, I feel rather good. Or maybe I feel bad?”

Katanagatari continued its fine form with a very engaging 7th episode that leaves the ending very open. With Nanami out and no longer able to be considered as some final boss, who knows what we’re in for.

Death and decay

As usual there was a tonne of dialogue to keep the fansubbers happy. I think great credit needs to go to Nakamara Mai, who has done a stellar job of voicing Nanami. She gave some pretty cool personality to this prodigy. Background music was also a treat as usual.

However, the animation in this episode was noticeably dull compared to previous episodes. For starters a few scenes degenerated into sidescroller-esque segments (whether this was truly for style or mere cost-cutting can be debated). Moreover, Nanami and Shichika’s moves were conveniently too quick to animate, leading to some very repetitive flurries and blurs. There were also a lot more stills in this episode compared to previous ones, not to mention the thicker outlines of the character models.

Katanagatari - the sidescroller game

All this points to some potential budget problems that face animators White Fox. The episode was still entertaining, but it was these few things that rather bugged me and reduced my overall enjoyment, which is a shame, because despite last month’s spoilerific trololol, what unravelled was still very cool. Let’s hope Katanagatari maintains some good form for the remaining episodes.

Awwwww~ ❤

It was a good ep I reckon. And they even managed to sneak in a bit of the maniwani xD . I am glad they did not have a similar spoilerific trololol…It does leave the series VERY open indeed…and they’ll now have to come up with 5+ baddies who are “better” or “equal” to the “Best in Japan”…..weird situation here…

Why do so many shows have animation quality problems midway? They should have planned ahead regarding their budget…oh well, at least it’s still fun 🙂

I too noticed the bad animation quality of this episode. But looking at the preview, it looks like it will be better in the next ep. I also don’t know if the animation was intentional or not.

Nanami was too overpowered. The outcome is sad though. 😦
