Working!! – review

“Irasshaimase!”

WHAT?! OVER ALREADY?!

Okay this review is going to be shorter and much sweeter compared to my last two. For all you slice-of-life lovers out there, Working!! is a highly entertaining and humourous watch. In my humble opinion, this show has surpassed indeed surpassed K-On!! (yes, the second exclammation mark is deliberate) in terms of its fun and direction.

I think the seiyuu’s deserve some praise. They’ve instilled much character and life to the various personalities we see in Working!!. A special mention needs to go to Asumi Kana who voiced Popura, and Kamiya Hiroshi who did a semi-evil Souma. Besides that, sound was very meh, except for the very catchy and upbeat OP tune Someone Else.

Animation was fairly average. Although I dig those chibi moments, there were definitely some moments where characters were distorted. The backgrounds also generally lacked variety, and I often felt that we were looking at rooms rather than an actual restaurant itself.

CHIBI WAR!

The thing that obviously kept everyone watching was the range of characters (if you’ve read my previous 2 reviews, this should sound very familiar). Everyone has a favourite, and while I’m assuming Popura is number one class-favourite, I found Yamada a fantastic addition. Her deceptive little sister image is a bonus to each episode she’s in.

Of course everyone’s wondering what the hell they did Maya, her being introduced in the last episode. She’s like the total inverse of Nami (the VERY normal girl) from Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. Perhaps this is a sign that they’ll make a season 2. With such high DVD sales, it’s certainly a strong possibility.

If you’re looking for a ripping yarn, you’ve clearly come to the wrong place. As with many SoL series, Working!! pretty much lacks major plot. However there is notable romantic development slowly brewing between minicon Souta and Mahiru the man-fearer. This often leads to great comedic effect, whether it be the various beatings he receives, or the misunderstandings Souta’s sister receives.

There’s not really that much else to say, besides the fact that this series was far too short (hell, it’s as if I’ve been repeating myself in these three reviews). Working!! is an extremely fun ride, as long as all you want is good laughs with no thought-process involved at all.
