4. Senkou no Night Raid

Surely spies have to be subtler than these ones….

Summary: The story is set in Shanghai in 1931, when the Imperial Japanese Army has been dispatched to mainland China due to the relatively recent First Sino-Japanese War, Russo-Japanese War, and World War I. In this cosmopolitan city of intrigue, there is a special military spy organization called “Sakurai Kikan” that has since been buried in history. [ANN]

What’s hot: Oooo it’s the espionage genre! The concept sounds good already.

What’s not: Sometimes characters in these types of anime series fall into the genre trap and become stereotype. Let’s hope they give some complexities to each of the characters.

5. Sarai-ya Goyou

Ooooo stylish~

Summary: Based on the like-titled manga.

The manga follows the lives of the House of Five Leaves gang members in Edo-era Japan during the height of the shōgun’s rule. In particular, the masterless samurai (rōnin) Akitsu Masanosuke finds himself desperate for work after being let go by one lord after another for his naïvety. He becomes the bodyguard of the House of Five Leaves gang’s charismatic leader Yaichi and discovers there is more to the gang leader than his criminal activities would suggest. [ANN]

What’s hot: It looks great and sounds great. It’s also being produced by some very experienced staff.

What’s not: I’m not sure who’s responsible for music. Surely they can’t be too bad.

6. Hakuoki

But I wanted ninjas….

Summary: Anime adaptation of the PS2 game Hakuoki. The story involves its female protagonist and the Shinsengumi samurai group of Kyoto during the 19th century

What’s hot: The director is Osamu Yamasaki. Sounds unfamiliar? Well he directed a few Mushishi episodes, and that series turned out as a pure gem.

What’s not: O noes. Not another historical anime based off a videogame *cough* Sengoku Basara *cough*. We ALL know how videogame-turn-anime series turn out. Epic fail. I’m surprised why directors resort to adapting videogames of the historical genre instead of directly using  Japan’s already rich history. Please don’t screw up.

7. Black*Rock Shooter

Nice guns~

Summary: Remember that virtual idol singer Hatsume Miku? Well I did. Black*Rock Shooter will be an anime series based off her VOCALOID SONG.

What’s hot: From watching the trailer, animation looks fantastic. This will be a fun series to watch.

What’s not: Anime based off a song?! What next…

And there we have it: my pick of the next anime season coming soon to a Japanese TV on the opposite side of the world. There are a lot more anime series coming out as well, but these 7 are a few that have caught my attention the most. Stay tuned~
