Darker Than Black Gaiden OVA 01

You’re as good as I’ve heard. Unfortunately for you, your fight doesn’t end here. The Syndicate will…

Now that's what I call barbeque pork!

If you haven’t watched anything from the Darker Than Black series, it’s about time you should. This OVA exemplified what made the first season so awesome, and what was unfortunately lacking in the second.

"Whatchu talkin' bout Willis?"

Well that's not the worst 'contract' I've seen...

A lot has happened in the Darker Than Black universe since the first 2 seasons. In short, in a world that is parallel to ours, meteors landed in several countries, leading to the creation of areas called “Hell’s Gates” in certain places in the world (including Tokyo) where ordinary laws of physics and logic do not work. At the same time all the stars, planets and the moon in the sky disappeared, replaced by false stars representing Contractors, people who gained awesometastic powers in return, losing ‘unnecessary’ emotions.

Ah crap! I'm turning blue!

Our hero is Hei, the ‘Black Reaper’, one of the most deadly Contractors. The OVA essentially fills in the space between seasons 1 and 2, and will most likely answer the questions left behind after season 2.

Talk about having a splitting headache! XP

This episode was beautiful in the fact that it had great action sequences (the first few minutes will totally blow your mind away) and subtler, more emotional moments between Hei and Yin. Bones did a fantastic job of juxtaposing the growing relationship between the two, against the much larger conflict that they face.

That's tomato sauce right there~

Look! Matching hats!

What was absolutely fantastic about this episode was how effectively the soundtrack was used to depict the quieter moments shared between Yin and Hei. Pure magic. Animation was good as well, as expected of Bones. The fight-scene ‘choreography’ as usual, is excellent, and epitomises what made season 1 so awesome, being full of short, action-packed sequences where people actually die.

The first episode in the DTB OVA mini-series is a clear winner that harks back to its season 1 looks, but adds even more depth to the relationship that Hei and Yin share. With only 3 more episodes to left, we are left wondering how Gaiden will end, especially after watching Gemini (season 2). Keep up the good work Bones!

Oh mah gawd! I jus' shat in mah pantz!
