Durarara!! – 01

Ikebukuro: street gangs, a Russian immigrant, a bartender who can lift up vending machines, an information dealer with a penchant for manipulation, and to top it off, a headless Irish fairy.

This ain't your normal city...

Some say that it is often the original manga that makes or breaks the anime adaptation. How true. While Durarara!! is based on a series of light novels of the same title, this dictum still applies. It’s a crazy and original concept that intrigues us viewers, even before we’ve even seen anything.

Hey you on the right.... stop staring at me like that

Our main guy Mikado Ryuugamine is the new kid on the block. As expected, he’s shy and innocent and I can’t help but be peeved off not only by his voice actor (which makes him sound like a girl), but also his cliched personality. It’s the only fault I see so far in this series, bar the times his best friend Masaomi Kida blabbering constantly whenever he gets the chance. If you haven’t read the light novels, there is no way you can tell where this series will go. The bustling and colourful suburban jungle of Ikebukuro is animated suitably, emphasising the great tides of people that congregate in its streets.

"I want cat ears like that too!"

Anger management much needed

Another problem which may arise is due to the sheer number of characters, all of which need screentime. There are 7 main characters, and 12 supporting characters. I just fear Brains Base won’t have enough time to develop each character well in 24 episodes. It remains to be seen how good the end result is. Sound is amazing apart from Mikado’s pre-pubescent voice. The soundtrack is smooth, jazzy and really nice to listen to. Animation is top notch as well. You really get the sense that you’re focusing on a small group of characters, rather than all of Ikebukuro itself.

Gotta love cross-promoting!

OP: the best OP of any anime series aired this year. It’s lively and really fun to watch. Bonus points for the really catchy tune.

ED: suitably JPop to fit with the teenage undertones that will obviously be present throughout the series.

Episode verdict: 8.75/10

An opening episode that introduces many of the characters and an interesting premise. As expected from the makers of Baccano!, Durarara!! looks to be the best, if not, one of the best watches this season, marred potentially by an uninteresting leading male.

Personally I did’t think Mikado’s voice acting was thaaat bad. I agree though that it does get quite confusing to catch up with what’s going on with so many characters. I hate the W+S cross promoting…..
