“I offer my respect to a pioneer of the Real World. There is only one way for us, who have no real bodies, to go there. You too have found a vessel, have you not…”

Meet Merry and her navel
I found Yumekui Merry to be one of the more interesting show aired in the past week. The concept is intriguing to say the least, and while it does have some clichés, it’s not bogged down by them like Infinite Stratos.

Yumeiji visiting the dentist?
Plot summary from AniDB: “High-school student Fujiwara Yumeji possesses the unusual ability to see other people’s dreams. One day, he meets Merry who had wandered from the “Dream World” into the “Real World”. This meeting raises many questions for Yumeji. Who exactly is Merry? What is the Dream World and what are Nightmares? What purpose do the Nightmares have for entering the Real World?
On the boundary between the Real World and the Dream World, the duo’s battle against the Nightmares begin!”

Eye spy...
The dream world as envisioned and portrayed by the people of J.C. Staff is visually creative. From the fish bones swaying in the wind to a simple finished can of tuna, it’s clear a lot of detail has been put in creating this feline-themed world. It’s a world that somewhat reminded me of the desolate landscape that appeared in Casshern Sins (in fact they share the same director Shigeyasu Yamauchi).

John Doe - the Chaser
The close-quarter combat sequence was also well-directed and it hopefully shows the potential this series has. The great thing about Yumekui Merry is that it is able to effectively use light-hearted moments and more serious segments and not look forced.

Puss... in boots...???
The cast shown so far is generally likeable too. Merry is definitely one of cutest characters this season and can prove to be an awesome fighter on her own right too. Isana Tachibana’s character is less forced than your usual tsundere and it’ll be interesting to see what role she plays later in this series.

I wear glasses too!
Perhaps the only thing I found lacking in this episode was the fact that it didn’t really show much substance at all! A significant time was spent on the more mundane slice-of-life stuff I’m not too worried about. Fortunately we have a whole season ahead of us
OP: really catchy song! Some nice visuals here too.
ED: Didn’t really care too much for the song. I was expecting the ED to be more ‘revealing’ with the whole petals blowing off Merry’s body, but hey, it’s what you can’t see that makes it interesting right? ;P

Merry wants you to vote for her for Saimoe 2011
